Stalin's daughter Lana Peters dies at 85 →
Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s daughter, whose defection to the West during the Cold War embarrassed the ruling communists and made her a best-selling author, has died. She was 85. Lana Peters—who was known internationally by her previous name, Svetlana Alliluyeva—died of colon cancer Nov. 22 in Wisconsin, where she lived off and on after becoming a U.S. citizen, Richland County Coroner Mary...

Minnesota Poll: Support falls for ban on gay... →
So about another 17 months or so of republican control of congress in Minnesota? Is it more gratifying that Minnesotans are generally against crazy bigotry it or horrifying that we still need to be polled about it?

Facebook page that links to the first few episodes of Game of Thrones for the HBO-challenged among us. Comes with a lot of ads and attempts to install annoying things on your computer, but is otherwise legit.

The Audacity of Minnesota: Senator Amy Klobuchar →
I sort of wish it wasn’t left up to Elle to give more national exposure to one of the best Senators in the country. I also wish that one time in the history of the universe, an article could be written about a Minnesotan without including a series of anecdotes that show how smart, modern but incredibly folksy we all apparently are.

Holy fucking shit. Bad work 21st century. Another question that was asked in this poll is “do you believe the right side won the Civil War?” Those results will be released in the near future. I think we have a pretty good idea which way most of those responses will go.

kohenari: It may be helpful, at a time like this — when Congress is threatening to shut down the U.S. government in a dispute over a tiny fraction of the federal budget — to think of legislators like a lost forest tribe. … “It’s jarring and surprising,” said Prof. Gary King, an expert in using computers to find patterns in large amounts of data. And, King said, probably...

A poll bomb of a terrible survey is in order.  →
My local paper, the La Crosse Tribune, has one of those insipid polls today, the ones where you see the results and despair for humanity. This one is a doozy. “Today’s poll: Is prejudice against whites on par with prejudice against current minorities?”  Yes is winning, and it makes me feel as if I live in western Iowa again.
